Welcome to The Empire at Home. I’m Dr Seamus MacPherson, and this is where I think about ideas of empire, race, colonialism in relation to the Highlands. I’m a historian at the Centre for History, University of the Highlands and Islands, where I’ve become increasingly interested in understanding the way our past influences who we are today – and how others see our region. Through my teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate courses I’ve been exploring notions of Scots in the Empire, the Empire in Scotland, Black radical politics and hip hop, the history of cricket – and the way Highland, Scottish, and British identities overlap, contradict and develop over time.
